ABOUT US

Our Mission Statement:

To improve global literacy and education by collecting children's books and the funds need to ship them to create libraries in Africa.

Penn State's chapter of the African Library Project collects gently-used children's books from grades K to 8 as well as reference books and teacher manuals to build libraries in countries throughout Africa, based on the existing guidelines of the national non-profit organization: The African Library Project.

It takes just 1,000 books and $500 to create a library. In the past three years, the Penn State chapter of the African Library Project has helped start libraries in Swaziland, Botswana, and Ghana. In the 2012-2013 school year, we have committed to 10 more libraries in Malawi and Sierra Leone. The libraries our organization have helped to build are primarily located within schools but are open to the community.

By collecting and sending children's books, we're creating an opportunity for hundreds of thousands of students and members of the community who otherwise wouldn't have that quality education. Although we are currently a relatively small service group, we have already been able to make a huge difference - 54,000 books collected since 2009 -- for a total of over 45 libraries!
